HISTORY OF AZAM FC.
Established in 2007. Said Salim Bakhresa Group of Companies SSB started in a humble manner with a small restaurant in the Port City of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in mid 70 s. It has now emerged as a respected business group in the region. The Group has its operations spread in Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, Congo and most recently in Mozambique and Rwanda. Plans are in place to spread its wings to other countries. The group now boasts of a turnover of hundreds of million United Sates Dollars and is a proud employer of more than two thousand employees associated directly.
There are several companies under its umbrella and have investments mainly in Food and Beverage Sector, Packaging, Logistics, Petroleum, ICT and Real Estate. Having taken football as a hobby, the idea came up to form a strong football company team that can compete in the prestigious Tanzania top flight league.
Yusuf Bakhressa took up the initiative of ensuring that the club is formed. According to the Team Chairman Mr Abubakar Said Bakhresa who is also the CEO of Bakhresa Goup of Companies, Yusuf have always been fond of local football and footballers, as a hobby he has helped many footballers to secure chance to develop their career in Europe.
So when the family adopted the idea of fooming a football club, Yusuf first major target was to get the best players who will help the now established Azam FC gain promotion to play in the Tanzania Mainland Premier League.
That dream was realised as Azam FC joined the top flight football in 2008 /09 season. Indeed, there was no looking behind as Azam FC with star-studded players became a force to reckon in the domestic league. Azam FC finished in eighth position in its first season on top flight football.
But the team made a tremendous improvement the following season finishing in the third position and the season follow (2010/11) finish on third. The good thing about Azam FC is that it has a strong youth team and this was depicted in the Tanzania Mainland Under 20 Premier League whereby the team won the trophy back to back befor lossing it on the season of 2010/11.
Azam FC has made a huge step which other local clubs have been afraid to undertake by announcing construction of its own stadium. Already the land has been bought at Chamanzi in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam and construction has begun. The multimillion project consists of sand pitch training ground, modern swimming pool, gym and artificial turf playing ground. The project also includes modern hostel with self contained rooms.
